As we step into 2025, I am filled with optimism and purpose regarding the direction of the South African Endoscopic Spine Society (SAESS). Our mission is clear: to establish South Africa as a regional leader in endoscopic and minimally invasive spinal surgery, fostering a strong community of skilled surgeons, empowered patients, and collaborative partnerships.
1. Expanding Training and Education
One of our top priorities is to scale up training opportunities. Through the continued success of our Endoscopic Spine Course, Minimally Invasive Spine Course, and Basic Spine Course, hosted annually at Wits University, we aim to reach more surgeons, including those from underserved provinces and neighboring African countries.
In 2025, we plan to launch a standardized endoscopic training curriculum, with progressive learning levels and hands-on mentorship. Our long-term vision includes developing a national accreditation pathway for endoscopic spine surgeons.
2. Improving Surgical Access and Patient Outcomes
Technology in spine surgery should not be a privilege—it should be an accessible solution to reduce patient morbidity, speed up recovery, and improve quality of life. Through SAESS, we hope to engage with hospital administrators, medical aids, and public health entities to increase access to endoscopic spinal procedures, especially in the public sector.
3. Research and Data-Driven Advocacy
In 2025, we will strengthen our research arm. We will initiate multi-center audits and outcome studies, focusing on cost-effectiveness, patient-reported outcomes, and complication rates of endoscopic spine surgery in the South African context. These efforts will support our advocacy for broader institutional and policy support.
4. Regional Collaboration and Global Partnerships
SAESS will actively collaborate with international societies in Asia, Europe, and the Americas to exchange knowledge, invite expert faculty, and promote African innovation in spine surgery. We also aim to host a Pan-African Endoscopic Spine Symposium, inviting delegates from across the continent.
2025 is not just another year; it is our turning point. The South African Endoscopic Spine Society is not just about technique—it’s about transformation. Together, let’s raise the standard of spinal care for every South African patient.
